i think i have heard of a lot of people use Pine to make play stands, its in the good list so its safe, i had a apple tree branch that i made into a perch in samsons cage a few years ago, and that was solid, he couldn't even scratch the bark off it Very Happy he tried but was indestructible bounce

but i would go for the strongest safe one i think, be good to wait for opinions on this one, as i will think about doing the same thing. Irina may be a good person to ask also. Very Happy

just thought, you could have a look at some pre-made ones on the internet in shops, and see what they use. as they gotta list what they have used so you know its safe.

the crabapple swingy thingy i made for cjs (on the flying trapeze video) is supposed to be a soft wood too, but cjs really hasn't done any harm to it (yet) except for pulling off the bark in places and a few scratchy beak marks...surprised, its still in top shape for a so called 'soft wood'...(he uses it often now that i've moved it, too) so i think it also has to do with the bird, and what else is on the playstand, etc to keep them otherwise occupied...imo Question

The thing with pine,is that it is absolutely fine when it is dry, but fresh branches of pine contain too much sap which can be sticky and messy, even though not poisonous (though can't imagine huge amounts of it being beneficial).

Playstands can be made of any branches really, and if you are making your own, you can always replace the branch once it is chewed up Very Happy Always leave the bark on the branches, as it is not only good for birds' feet, it also files down the nails and contains trace minerals birds consume when nibbling on the bark. The bark is great for them!

I know this thread was created a while ago, but somehow I missed everything! (I suppose because I was on holiday Very Happy )

PS: a little note on prunus family, not all those on the list are from the family Very Happy Plums and cherries, peaches, nectarines and apricots are, and almond is also prunus family but it does appear on all safe lists.
