PostSubject: Weight   Sun Jul 12, 2009 8:16 am

I keep weighing mine and both seem to be underweight, Bella never goes above 420 grammes and Bellino only touches 400. Both have had check ups with an avian vet and pronounced healthy, in fact Bellas vet said shed not seen such a healthy grey for a while. They do excercise a lot and chat, sing and play with their toys all the time. Neither seem to have any issues so why do they only weigh so much?

Sorry debbie only just read this,if bellas still moulting then this could be the reason for being slightly under weight, does she still have cooked veggies or baby food? Have you tried weighing them after they've eaten, there could be as much as ten grams difference before and after a meal. Smile

How often are you weighing them? if more than say twice a week you won't notice a difference, bellino is still a baby but should be putting on weight slowly. It just may be they're going to be on the small side like jasper, try putting out some of your foods like potatoes (jasper likes mash best) or chicken/fish or rice and veggies. If you don't mind them eating at your table, let them share some food with you. Not being funny but if your out all day that could be another reason for them not eating much hence not putting on weight. No doubt when i get home tonight jaspers bowl will still be full of food Rolling Eyes

Bellas started moulting again, only weighed them a couple of times and they had both been out for a couple of hours at the time, they eat healthily and are healthy in themselves, been told on another forum not to worry about their weight, its just vantage got me worried about it really, im not going to weigh them regularly, just now and again or if theyre under the weather. A lot on the other forum have never weighed theirs at all!

What i meant was weight them first thing am and then an hour or two later and note the difference. Idealy bella should be a little heavier, keep check and write everything down in your diary say once a week then you can look back to see if they're gaining steady weight. If everything else is normal then you've no need to worry but it is good to know what they do weigh then if ever there is a big drop in weight you could look back and maybe know why ie: due to moulting.

Debbie i'll look in the library tomorrow, there was a good book in there that lists all the parrots base weights,i'll see if it's still there. Don't worry about your birdies, although bella is bigger than jasper height/length wise, jasper seems more stocky and compact. They are all different,it's the way they are like us humans Smile
